Civil War

Did the results of the Civil War justify its cost? Does the answer to that question depend on whether you are a Northerner or a Southerner, black or white?

I think the results of the civil war did justify the cost becasue it was imparitive for America to stay together. If Lincoln had allowed the confederacy to split, there would have been a war between the two new countries anyway. There would have been issues about slaves escaping to the union, and because they were two seperate counties, the confederacy wouldn't have been able to do anything about it without attacking. I think this is true regardless of whether you are a northerner or a southerner, black or white. All have to agree a fight was inevitable and it was better to just preserve the union and have one fight at one time rather than a bunch of little fights over and over again.

no i do not think that the end justified its costs. the civil war killed hundreds of thousands of americans black and white. the economy suffered and politically people were chossing uncondstitutional means. over time it was seen that slavery was dieing out. granit it came back after the cotton gin but it would of died out again through popular soverty. i do not think it depends on a northerner or a sourtherner point of view. i personally sympathize with the south but i can see where the north is coming from. but thats becasue i can see both sides. i personally think an persons strong opionoin on somthing this complex has to do more with how informed you are and how hard headed you are not your skin color or where you live.

oh yeah and it would of been easier to just come up with a compromise insted of spliting the union.

Yes, the results of the Civil War did justify the costs. The United States was once again United, which made it stronger again. New industrialized jobs were made from the civil war to employ the people. The rest of the world had been dried of its resources that it depended on the US to provide, so we could sell our stuff. The answer depends on whether you are a northerner or southerner. The south lost, so their results weren't that good from the war, and they didn't justify the loss of life. It did for the north for the reasons I mentioned above. I think it would be the same answer for both whites and blacks, because blacks got set on the path to equal rights from the war.

I think the civil war and its results were a balanced equation. many people sacrificed but great results came from it. the united states became stronger because of it, rights for blacks eventually came along, and slavery was abolished. I really do think it depends on who you are to whether or not you think the results justified its cost. If you were black i think it had a greater impact on them. after years of being a slave to someone and fearing of being caught if you had escaped, it was a breath of fresh air and the results justified the cost. However, if you were a southerner the end results were more than likely dissapointing and the cost didnt seem worth while.

I believe this question is very dependent on who you are and when you are looking at the question. Immediately after the war, the majority of white Southerners would have been upset because they lost. The majority of white Northerners would have rejoiced because they had won. If I had been a black at this point I might have had mixed feelings towards the outcome. While they legally received freedom, in their hearts they probably knew it would be a long hard struggle before they were free in the eyes of every white man or woman. So ultimately, I believe the war was justified in some peoples' view points and others felt they sacrificed lives for nothing. It all depended on who you were and what you valued. Today, the majority of people would say that the war could be justified because America would not be the nation we are today if the states had remained divided.

I think that the results of the War did justify its cost. Even though many lives were lost, it brought together the nation we are today. A united, and most importantly FREE. I do think that the question did depend on your race or where you were from. I do think that to a black person it would've been much more exciting than to the average white. The blacks were free and then later on came their rights. Also, i think if you were a woman, you would've like it. The Civil War brought about many opportunities for the women and eventually women's rights came along.

I agree with Levi when he said that it did depend on whether you were North or South. The Union succeeded in reaching their goals when they won the war (perserve the union and free the slaves). The union did lose alot of lifes in the war but thier sacrifice was actuall awarded where the south's casualities were not. The South lost alot in the war people, their industry, money, etc. and to no purpose really because the North won anyway. In the end though as a whole I do believe that the Civil War was worth it, look at where we are today.

After reading last night's section I would like to add another reason that the Civil War was worth it. The Civil War was a test of whether the ideals set up in the Constitution "can long endure" (Lincoln at Gettysburg). The Civil War can be justified by the fact that it proves that our idea for a country can withstand a war against itself.

I believe the results of the Civil War justified the cost. A divivded United States made it a weak nation, and vulnerable to invasion. With the union restored it made the United States strong again. I would have to agree with Stephanine, though, that to many of the time period the results may not have been worth the cost, exspecially for the south. Even though it was inevitable that a war was to be fought over slavery, it was a great victory to the north to decided the issue in this war. To the north it was justified because not only did they free the slaves, united the country again, and gave it a stronger industrial system. To the blacks it left them in freedom so they would probably agree that it was a sucess.

To me, i believe that it did justify the cost. Not to say that all those people needed to die for it, but keeping the union together. I do believe that that statement does depend on who and where you are. Some people in the south would say that they should have won and others say that its a good thing they didn't. It might have been the best thing that we won. but also after the fact about slavery, we might have ended up back as one country. Well that's what i think. it could be anything. I'm just glad that we live in a neutral state.

Yes, I think that the results of the Civil War justify the cost. Because of the war the U.S. once again became a united nation. I think it depends on whether you were from the North or the South though. The Union were able to reach their goals when they won the war even though they lost many lives in the war. Even though the South lost a lot of money, people, etc., because of the war, they lost anyway so there wasn't much purpose behind it. I just think it was better to have a big fight and get that over with in order to preserve the union in the end.

I think that the results of the civil war did justify its cost. Though many lives were lost and the damage was high we gave the blacks a right to their freedom although racism still continued. Both the north and the south did cause a lot of damage and they burned and destoyed many cities inculding Atlanta. It was a high cost but for all the right reasons and the blacks were given the right to be treated as people and not just property. I also think that it doesn't depend on if your southern, northern, black, or white your opinion is based on your own personal experiences and ideas and also the influnences around you. Many people during the civil war had many mixed views although it was clear that ideas and veiws were shaped by the area you were in. But despite that i think all peoples ideas and beliefs come from their heart and their own personal feelings not north or south or black or white.

Yes i think the resullts of the civil war justified the cost. The war opened many oppurtunities for people. New jobs became available for everyone, even women were allowed to get jobs. Because we were plentiful in resources we were depended upon and this was good news for our country. Also the war united our country once again which we in to be strong. I guess the answer somewhat depends on if you were a Northerner or Southener. The south lost so the war doesnt really justify the loss of life in the south. But the North won their cause in abolishing the slavery so it was justified. I think it doesnt matter if you were black or white because slaves got their freedom and the majority of whites wanted this so both were justified.

I believe that the results of the Civil War do justify the cost. Because the US became the US again and we were stronger for it. it also put to rest the issue of slavery that had been the main issue of the war and a hugh source
of termoil before and during the war.

Well since i posted this answer like 3 times and it never worked I'm going to try one more time. I don't believe the Civil war justified everything that we had to go through. I don't agree with slavery. but Lincoln threatened our union because of this issue/ They should have just let the two split. Then there wouldn't have been as much fighting. Northerners would believe that it was worth it and so would blacks because they want their freedom. But the whites in the south would not think its justified because they want to live the way they want to.
