Conquistadors -- Week 2

Should the Spanish conquistadors be especially blamed for the cruelties and deaths (including those by disease) inflicted on the original Indian populations of the Americas or should they be hailed as great explorers and creators of a new culture?

I don't think the Conquistadors can be blamed. How would they know they carried diseases that would harm the Natives?
But there came a point when they knew they were hurting people and didn't do annything to stop it, which is their fault.

This is quite a tough choice. Its like saying should we remember Bill Clinton for having an affair in the White House, or remember him for decreasing the amount of people on welfare to its lowest in 35 years? However, I think the conquistadors were just thinking about acquiring land and wealth not decreasing a whole civilization due to diseases they carried.

I think that the conquistadors should be blamed for any unprovoked attacks on natives. The diseases, I don't think anyone can be blamed for those because no one actually made them, or knew that other people weren't immune like they were. When the conquistadors went into the Aztec cities and killed them all just to get their gold, I see that as very wrong. Other than the pillaging, killing, and enslaving they were great explorers of the New World.

I think that they are both. Without their coming to the America's and aquiring land we would not be the nation we are today. So for that we have to give them credit. Their customs and ideas have added to what we are today and our lives. But again at the same time i think they should not have treated the indians the way that they did. Becouse of the violent acts to kill against the indians purposely i blame them for their actions. We all have the power to choose our actions. And i believe that violence will only cause more trouble as it did between the indians and the spanish.

I dont think the Conquistadors can be blamed for the diseses that they gave to the natives because they didn't know that they would have carried them over. And even if they did how could they have helped it? I do think it was wrong however that they would go on like killing sprees to get gold or glory they were just being greedy and they should be held responsible.

The conquistadors shouldn't be blamed for the diseases, but they should be blamed for everything else they did. But putting that aside, they should be praised for all of their findings and contributions to the modern day America.

It looks like everyone is saying that the conquistadors shouldn't be blamed for their diseases but be blamed for the mass killings. I have to say that if the conquistadors had not been so gold and land hungry they might have stopped to think about the fact that they were carrying these foreign diseases. So even though the conquistadors may have found a new land, they also destroyed an important part of the Americas by demolishing the Indian populations.

Casey,
I think the conquistadors are to be blamed. Maybe not for wanting to explore the world and unknown land, but for how they treated a human race. They may not have known that they were carrying deadly diseases, but once they found out they gave infected blankets to the Indians, and even destroyed entire cultures in the process. Then they claimed a land that already belonged to a people, and started to push them off it. I agree with Levi, the Conquistadors, were a greedy people wanting land, fame, and gold, but not caring what they destroyed to get to it. I also agree with Kaitlins point of view that they didn't practice what they preached about Christanity.

I think I agree with Mandy, they can't really be blamed because they didn't really know that they were going to start a major pandemic. However, they were very cruel and unjust to the natives. Even if they didn't intentionally make them sick, they were intentionally hurting them. There are many other things they can be blamed for.

I don't think that the conqusitadors can be blamed. If they were oblivious to the fact that they were bringing them over, we can't accuse them. I do think that they should be hailed as great explorers and creators of a new culture, because without them, our world wouldn't be what is is today.

i belive that the conquistadors should be blamed for the time when they knew that they were harming the natives but not for the time in which they frist came over with the diseases which they had no idea about and how much damage they would do.

I believe they should be blamed, the conquistadors came over and started killing for the sake of gold, glory and God. after they anitionally killed the natives for the land and gold, the deseases continued to kill them. so yes they should be remembered for the battle and murder, but they should also be remebered for not trying to stop infrecting the natives.
in conclushion yes. if there were no conquistadors then there would of been no death or desease.

I think that because the Conquistadors were unaware of the diseases they were carrying at first, they shouldn't be to blame. But as they realized that they could use the diseases to their "advantage" to kill the Natives I think they should be to blame for doing something that was very wrong; all it did was cause more problems between the two groupls. Also considering how our world has been shaped by their actions and discoveries I think that they should be given the credit they deserve for helping form our nation into how it is today.
