Slavery -- Week 13

How effective were the abolitionists in achieving their goals? Did they hasten or delay the end of slavery?

The abolitionists were very effective in achieving their goals They started many antislavery societies, sent petitions to Congress, and used literature to influence others to their cause. They believed that it was a national sin and wanted to clean America of it. There were many abolitionist in this time period Nat Turner, who led an uprising against Virginian slave owners, and Harriet Beecher Stowe influenced many through her novel of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Fedrick Douglass influenced others through his eloquent speeches and autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Fedrick Douglass." The abolitionists hastened the end of slavery by through petitions and pleas to Congress, they put the idea into government that slavery may not be such a good thing. Their influence would later led to the Civil War, and the abolishment of slavery in the United States.

The abolitionists were effective in that they ended up freeing the slaves, but they were not very effective in the means of freeing the slaves. People like Garrison attacked the slavery issue so harshly that they ended up just making the southerners defensive and less willing to give up their slaves, while making other less forceful abolitionists hate them for making the south defensive. The abolitionists were very persistent in their efforts to get a bill through Congress against slavery, so persistent in fact that they got the Congress tired enough to pass the Gag resolution to stop any petitions about slavery. These polarized sides eventually led to the Civil War. The Civil War did end up getting the slaves freed, but it was probably not the quickest, or least bloody way to get the slaves freed. So the abolitionists accomplished their goal, but slowly and with a lot of wasted life.

The abolitionists did not achieve their goals as fast as they had wished, but their goals were achieved because we do not have that form of slavery in the US today. Abolitionist from the pre-Civil war era, such as Douglass, Garrison, and Stowe, did hasten the end of slavery, though. Through their protests, speeches, and books they were able to sway many people towards their cause. Also, these abolitionists were able to let the government hear their voice. Unfortunately, the government turned a deaf ear so the pleas of the abolitionist soon turned to a full out war. While the Civil War did bring some freedom for the slaves, the war for equality for blacks continued for many years after. Overall, the abolitionists did achieve their goals. Their goal may have taken a lot of time and lives, but in the end is was achieved.

I agree with Casey in saying that they were very effective in getting what they wanted done. They didn't get it done fast but did get it done. They did every thing they could to end slavery. It took time, but they were very effective.

I agree with Levi when saying the abolitionists were effective in ending slavery but they delayed it by their actions. Abolitionists pushed and pushed until the south became highly defensive making them fight harder to keep their slaves. Obviously the aboilitionist were effictive because we don't have slavery today we are equals, but it was delayed and a more bloody way of freeing slaves, Civil War fought over slavery in my opinion was the wrong way to end slavery. The abolitionist swayed many people throughout their campaign to end slavery even Congress passed a Gag Resolution to stop any petitions about slavery, so i think it eventually it would have ended on its own. So yes the abolitionist were effective in achieving their goal of Freeing slaves but it took ages and it was violent.

Slavery was a major battle in the war of equal rights for Americans. (yes i know that wasnt a war it was just a metaphor). This had the nice outcome of ending slavery, but it was very lengthy, meaning it took longer than what the abolitionists had planned and wanted. As many abolitionist writers and other movements were made, it seemed that they would (slave owners) see that they were fighting a losing battle. Yes, i know that buying and selling of slaves was a economic boost but it fair to treat a person like an animal when they have the same feelings as you. Anyways, overall the abolitionists got the results they wanted but not as soon as they wanted it. Slavery was ended but a war had to be fought and other struggles had to be made.

slavery as a whole was a major issue. many choose to ignore the issue and pretend nothing was wrong. but when the abolistioninst started petitions and movements againstit it was like a pebble rolling down a montain at first no one really notices then after it picks up speed and gathers snow with it it eventually can plow someone over. the abolitionist set out to make a change. through there movement and there protest, and the things written and the civil war fought the effectivly hastened the end of slavery.

I think that the abolitionists were very effective in achieving their goals and hastening the end of slavery. Many abolitionists held rallies and spoke out against the cruelity of slavery and the realistic horrors that they have seen. In some cases abolitionists were even blacks who would tell there own stories and experiences in what happens to slaves. They not only used the influences of speech but also through petitions that were sent to congress. But as other's began to see the horrors and wrongness of slavery i believe that they did all the could to help slaves escape and come north to freedom and also to help them find their families and gain freedom. Many fought for the north after they escaped and went back to fight the place where they had been a slave and also to revenge those who had done them wrong. Through all that they did they were very influencial in the hastening to the end of slavery through it still did take years to end.

The abolitionists were very efficient in influencing the end of slavery. The abolitionists started many anti-salvery societies, petitioned to Congress, gave speeches in public, wroted books such as Tom's Cabin, etc. The abolitionists led uprisings to gain attention, even taking this idea to Congress.Their influence leaded to the Civil War which ended Slavery but not discrimination.

Obviously, the abolishionists were very effective in thier goals. There is no slavery anymore so they were successful. They devoted themselves to thier cause and were willing to fight for what they believed in. They showed tremendous dedication to their cause, and it payed off for them. They wrote literature and spread the word of what they wanted.

Part 2
I think they hastened the end of slavery because it was definitely coming, but they pushed for to happen at that point in time. It would have happened gradually later anyway, because slavery was already gone in Europe, and America would have followed the example.

Their goals were eventually achieved, though not right when they wanted. They tried so hard to get people to to sway their way that it ended up making the people even more for slavery and upsetting them. Causing war and division between the country. In the end the slaves were freed, because today they are treated as equals but it took a really long time to get it to be that way. But I believe that they did hasten the end of slavery because without the war we probably would still have slavery today in the world.

The abolitionist really knew what they were doing when they tried to rid the country of slavery, they sent everything from petitions to literature to Congress to support what they were trying to accomplish.
Although what they wanted was accomplished eventually, but it did take a little longer than expected. We don't have slavery of this magnitude in america today, which is proof thatwhat they worked for was effective, if not delayed.

I think that the abolitionists were very effective in fighting for the removal of slavery. Throughout their fight they got rid of slavery. Like Steph said, it ended sleavery not discrimination. All abolitionists fought for what they thought was right and it all worked out in the end, because now we live in a free country!!

the abolitionists were effective in there atttempts to end slavery. In a way though they were slowing the process. They pushed and pushed until the south were defensive and willing to fight for thier slaves. the abolishionist were very set on getting a bill into congress against slavery. They put the problem out there and made america choose sides which eventually led to the amaerican civil war, and also the end of slavery in the united states.
