Witches -- Week 4

What aspects of the Salem Witch Trials can we see in present day society? Give at least one fully developed example.

The salem witch trials were composed largely of the hunt for people that were doing magic or outlawed things that they didn't agree with. People bagan to chase these people and prosecute them. Today this is like the terriosts. People in America oppose them and want to hunt them and put them on trial for their threats against the united states. This directly related to the trials of the people who they believed posssesed a power or threat to socity. Today we do the same thing in trying to prosecute people we believe to be a part of any terrists acts even though they may be innocent.

The Salem Witch trials, was a time where a few teenage girls were messing around, and one of the girls became ill. These girls accused innocent people of performing witchcraft, and many young people lost their lives. The court system never even gave a true chance for the accused to prove their innocence. If you were different, you could have been accused of witch craft, by just a birth mark. Religion greatly effected the opinions of the jurors. In todays society, religion is doesn't as strongly affect the court system and trials. People also have a chance to prove their innocence with evidence, and witnesses. The point of view of one person isn't the only one taken. I also agree with Hannah's opinion on terrorism.

I think that this is related to our present day society because we are wanting to persecute people that haven't done anything wrong. Innocent people are being put in the stands and being proved guilty by false evidence or by someone who has set them up. I agree with hannah this definetly relates to terrists. Anyone who is believed to have power over us, we just want to get rid of them.

the salem witch trials were perfect instances out how dumb we Americans can be because someone is different. I agree with hannah on the comparison with terrorist. we as a people tend to judge a person by their race especially if they are from the middle east. so if they are from the middle east some of us assume they are terrorist and pester them about it.

The salem witch trials were about persecuting people that hadn't done anything wrong. We see this today with terriosts they are only doing what they think is right and we as americans persecute them for what a few did in the past.

People are still very judgemental about things they do not understand or WANT to understand.

I believe that although we may not have witches persay, in modern society we do still have "witch-hunts". We look for a reason to discriminate against people. A modern example is the health care debates. People are argueing over similiar issues such as immigration and war costs.
Also the real witch hunts are still occuring today. In Saudi Arabia, 2008, a woman was accused of witchcraft and given the sentence of beheading.

*MAYNARD;)
Cathy points out a very good point when she says that we still have "witch-hunts" in a form. Humans in general look for a scapegoat when something goes wrong, for instance what happenend in our country under George Bush was blamed totally on him when the congressmen were to blame also. In the salem with trials the girls were practicing things that went against their relgion, so when they got caught they blamed their actions on someone else. The girls looked for a way out, and found it in single properity owning women who were already despised in the community so they blamed it on them. People were already judgemental towards these people so they automatically assumed the worst out of the persons wrongly accused. Like Casey said their legal system was totally corrupt, not even giving the accused a chance. After the witch-hunt was called off by the govenor the legal system was changed to what it is today, 'innocent till proven guilty'.

The salem witch trials were put together by people who didn't really know what they were doing. If you didn't like some one you could accuse them of being a witch and more than likely they would be killed.
In this day it can be realted, if you have any power or cause a treat to anything in socity you can be put on trial and you can also be put to death.

The Salem witch trials were a good example of mob behavior. If one person in a mob says something meant to incite the crowd, most of the people are incited, and those that weren't at first are pressured to change and be like everyone else, or risk being accused of something themselves. I think this is commonplace in our Senate and House. When a new bill is brought up, the party leaders decide their side and most of their party follows them. Then the whips for each party try to get all the remaining members with the rest. Then the parties target each other and try to alienate people.

I teh salem witch trials, people who were accused of witchcraft were convicted because of birth marks or freckles. They were judged by what they looked like. That happens now in modern society, and although not many are put to death for it, in WWII, jews were recognized for things like big noses, and they were judged and even put to death for it. Even now poeple are judged for what they look like.

The salem witch trails persecuted girls who did nothing wrong. they were judged because they were different which we do today in modern society. we judge people on their looks, race, and religion. Which in my opinion is wrong. Even though we don't kill people today because of their differences we still treat them differently.

Even before the Salem Witch Trials we had 'Witch Hunts', and this type of behavior continues today. People always have been and always will be persecuted for their beliefs, race, gender, origin etc. One of the most blatant examples of this would have to be just plain highschool. One person can start one rumor and it can trash that person for the rest of their Highschool career.

In our society today people do opress others for many different reasons. Whether others agree or disagree with whatever reason is, its still going to happen. The aspect that I think is noticed in our world today is that of persecution between groups/individuals. During the salem witch trials, if you were believed to be a witch there was no way to convince the persecuters otherwise... Their minds were already made up about you. Many people today are judged istantly because of their background or past and I think that has just carried on since the time period of the trials.

I do think there are many situations that we can relate to the Salem Witch Trials. We do single out "weird" people today, and we may not put them on trial but we do usually try to humilate them in some form or fashion. Also we like to blame people for things, without thinking first

yeah i know its late-- kaila said...

i didnt relize i forgot to do it. better late than never.

during the salem witch trials you saw prosocution without probably evidence. although there are laws put in place to stop this there can be instances where this happens. if a town were to have a rapid moving and fast pace desease, the goverment would be aloud to kill anyone they belive to be contagious that arnt inside the quarintine area and refuse to move to the quarintine area. the people arnt questioned. just like in the salem with trials the goverment goes on looks alone.
